Capsule exhibition by east London artist Sahra Hersi that brings together V&A collection objects and her own archive in the Why We Make galleries.
Sahra Hersi takes over the Why We Make galleries at V&A East Museum this weekend, with Sahra Hersi Selects running Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 October. It's part of X Selects, the V&A's annual series that invites two practitioners to put together their own capsule display in these galleries, and this time it's Hersi's turn.
The display brings together objects from the V&A collection and Hersi's own archive, and the range is wide: ancient Greek building fragments sit alongside a 1960s dollhouse, the radical feminist poster design of See Red Women's Workshop, and Jos Pottery from Nigeria. Her own public realm installations, like Civic Carpet – Ilford Forever (2023), are shown alongside them, so you get to see the objects she's drawn on and the work she's made from them in the same space.
Hersi is an east London artist and spatial designer with a background in architecture, and she describes her practice as 'caring about people, places, art & architecture in that order'. Her work covers public installations, objects, print and community workshops, and it usually starts on the ground: she gets to know a space through conversations with local residents, archival research and a close look at the surroundings, letting each project emerge organically. More recently, she's brought in ecological elements, making room for plant life and local habitats alongside community making.
