World premiere of Tom Schulman's original stage play about a rabbi and a billionaire president of his congregation, directed by Andy Sandberg.
Sacrilegious opens at Riverside Studios on 5 December, running through to 23 January 2027. It's the world premiere of the first original stage play by Academy Award winner Tom Schulman, who wrote Dead Poets Society, What About Bob? and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. Andy Sandberg directs.
The play is a smart, funny and provocative comedy about what money can and cannot buy, and it doesn't shy away from the messy bits: power, promiscuity, charity and true love. The story kicks off on the holiest day of the year, when an idealistic young rabbi challenges the billionaire president of his congregation over a multi-million-dollar donation he believes compromises the community's values. That sparks a battle between principle and power, with $30 million on the table. It's a high-stakes clash over a very old question: what happens when your values run right up against a cheque that could change everything.
It's the second of five plays launching the Mainstage 26/27 Season at Riverside Studios, so there's plenty more coming to the venue over the next few months. The run is eight weeks long, with matinees on Thursday and Saturday, which makes it easy to fit in if you're not a night person. The casting hasn't been announced yet, so we'll find out who's taking on the rabbi and the billionaire closer to the time.
