Jazz musician Sarathy Korwar plays an intimate gallery performance responding to the work of painter Robert Ryman, followed by an exclusive exhibition viewing.
Ryman in Rhythm is a series of three live jazz performances at the Barbican Centre, with each musician responding to the work of the American painter Robert Ryman. The first is Sarathy Korwar on Wednesday 18 November, followed by tyroneisaacstuart on Friday 11 December, and Soweto Kinch on Friday 26 February 2027. All three start at 7.15pm in The Art Gallery on Level 3.
The whole thing comes from Ryman's lifelong love of jazz. He moved to New York to become a saxophonist, and though he turned to painting, he never stopped listening to music. He came to see each brushstroke as a note in a jazz improvisation, one building on the last, and these three musicians are working from that same place. They're all alumni of Serious' Take Five talent development programme, which has supported over 160 emerging UK jazz artists including Moses Boyd, Nubya Garcia and Emma-Jean Thackray.
Each performance is followed by an exclusive viewing of the exhibition, so you get the music and the art in one go. The series runs alongside Robert Ryman: The Real Thing, the first UK show to look at his work in depth in more than 30 years, with over 60 pieces from the mid-1950s to the early 2010s, supported by Kenneth C. Griffin & Griffin Catalyst and the Panoptès Collection.
