V&A creative commissions exhibition in which artists create work responding to the theme 'Making East London' and its past and possible futures.
New Work: Making East London is on at V&A East Museum until Sunday 18 October, the first theme in the V&A's new creative commissions programme. The museum is part of the V&A's move into the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, and this particular exhibition brings together work by Shahed Saleem, Es Devlin, Tania Bruguera, Lawrence Lek and others. The theme, Making East London, looks at the area's past and its possible futures, so it's a show that asks where the neighbourhood has come from and where it might be heading.
It's part of a wider project. New Work is the V&A's creative commissions programme, which they'll be staging twice a year, with artists creating work in response to a theme that explores how art and design intersect with daily life. This is the first one, and it's being shown at V&A East, the museum's home in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. The V&A's presence here actually spans two free sites: V&A East Storehouse on Parkes Street in Hackney Wick, which gives you a behind-the-scenes look at art, design, performance and fashion — and was shortlisted as Art Fund Museum of the Year 2026 — and V&A East Museum on the East Bank at Stratford, which is where this exhibition sits and which spotlights the people, ideas and creativity shaping global culture right now.
