Magic lantern show by lanternists Jeremy and Carolyn Brooker recreating the magic of a Victorian Halloween with original glass slides and modern creations.
Jeremy and Carolyn Brooker are bringing a Victorian Halloween magic lantern show to the Florence Nightingale Museum on Monday 26 October, with four showings throughout the day: 2:00pm, 4:00pm, 6:00pm and 8:00pm. Each one runs about half an hour, and you've got an hour after each show to wander through the museum's collections.
If you've never come across a magic lantern, it's a Victorian-era projector that throws images onto a screen. The Brookers use an authentic triple magic lantern, which can project three images at once. The show mixes original glass slides from the 19th and 20th centuries with their own modern creations, so you'll see genuine antiques alongside things they've made themselves. They're a couple of lanternists who still work with the original technology, and they've noted that it's a medium that can still captivate audiences of all ages.
The museum has split the day by audience. The 2:00pm and 4:00pm showings are family-friendly, while the 6:00pm and 8:00pm performances are for adults only, with a bar serving alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. It's a good way to tailor your visit: take the kids in the afternoon, or head in later for a drink and a more grown-up atmosphere. And since you've got that hour after each show to explore the museum, you can make a proper afternoon or evening of it rather than just popping in for the half-hour performance.
