Annual festival of talks, guided tours and workshops on death and mortality across London's cemeteries and historic sites in October.
London Month of the Dead returns from 18 to 27 October, with more than 60 events spread across various days of the week. It's an annual programme of talks, tours and workshops that looks at the city's relationship with death, and this year it's running across several locations, including West Norwood Cemetery, Dissenters Chapel and King's College.
The programme draws on archaeological, historical and art-based talks given by academics and historians, and it takes in London's 'Magnificent Seven' cemeteries, such as Highgate, Nunhead, Brompton and West Norwood. There are guided tours of sites like the St Brides charnel house and private mausoleums, alongside Death Cafés. It's a broad mix, so you can pick and choose what suits you: a cemetery walk one day, a talk the next, and a Death Café in between.
The whole thing started back in 2006 after the death of Stephen Coates's father. It began as a 'London Day of the Dead' sponsored by Hendrick's Gin in a Georgian house in Fitzrovia, before expanding to a week and then to a full month of events. It's curated by Coates and Suzette Field, who run the companies Antique Beat and A Curious Invitation respectively. They describe the mission as informing, entertaining and provoking on the subjects of death and mortality.
