Free exhibition of monochrome photography by Larissa Kouznetsova that layers illusion and reality in figures caught mid-thought and cities half dissolved into memory.
Larissa Kouznetsova is showing her monochrome photography at Highgate Gallery through 22 October, with the exhibition titled Half Seen, Half Remembered. It runs from 9 to 22 October, so you've got a good window to catch it if you're around North London.
The work sits in that strange gap between looking and knowing. Kouznetsova works in monochrome, and she describes the images as figures caught mid-thought and cities half dissolved into memory. There's a lot of layering going on here, too — she talks about layering illusion and reality until the boundary between them softens, which is a good way of describing that feeling when a photograph starts to look more like a dream or a half-forgotten memory than a literal record of a place.
That cinematic quality isn't an accident. Kouznetsova comes from a background in theatre and film, and she brings a strong sense of narrative to every frame. It's the kind of thing that makes you stop and wonder what happened just before the shutter clicked, or what's about to happen next, rather than just glancing at the image and moving on.
