Friends-only after-hours preview of the Hokusai exhibition, with an introduction by Gallery Director Jennifer Scott and a special Japanese supper club.
Dulwich Picture Gallery is hosting a Friends private view of Hokusai: Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji from the Iuchi Collection on Tuesday 24 November, from 6pm to 8pm. It's an after-hours preview for Friends of the gallery, so you get to see the exhibition before the general public. The evening starts with Gallery Director Jennifer Scott giving a special introduction to the show, and if you're staying on, the Café is running a Japanese supper club by Yuki Gomi from 7.30pm to 9.30pm, though you'll need to book that separately.
The exhibition itself runs from 20 October 2026 to 17 January 2027, and it brings the complete set of prints Katsushika Hokusai made between 1830 and 1833 to the UK for the first time. That's the original thirty-six plus ten additional designs, 46 in total. Across them, Hokusai depicts Mount Fuji from shifting viewpoints, seasons and moments of everyday life, and he was pioneering the use of Prussian blue pigment, which had only just been introduced. Among the highlights is a rare variant of Clear Day with a Southern Breeze (better known as Red Fuji) that's never been seen in the UK before, and an exceptional impression of Under the Wave off Kanagawa — the one most people know as The Great Wave.
