Brazilian jazz night at Fulham Pier with the Mario Bakuna Band, led by London-based guitarist and singer Mario Bakuna.
Mario Bakuna brings his band to Fulham Pier on Saturday 24 October, as part of the Global Sounds series. He's a Brazilian composer, arranger, singer and guitarist based here in London, and he's built a name for himself as one of the leading figures in the city's Brazilian jazz scene.
The set is titled Brazilian Landscapes, and it's a reimagining of pieces by Marcos Valle, Claudio Bertrami, Rique Pantoja, Gilberto Gil, Djavan, JoĆ£o Bosco and Arismar do EspĆrito Santo, alongside the forró of Dominguinhos and Luiz Gonzaga. It's a wide sweep of Brazilian music, from the northeast's forró, baiĆ£o and xaxado to the African heritage of ijexĆ”, samba and bossa nova, all filtered through jazz colours. Bakuna works with both his own compositions and arrangements of works by icons like Tom Jobim, Dorival Caymmi, Paulo Moura and JoĆ£o Donato.
On the night, he's joined by Rubem Faria on bass, Felippe Oliveira on electric guitar and Emilio Martins on drums. Bakuna himself handles acoustic guitar and vocals. He's toured more than 20 European countries and played to crowds of up to 150,000 at the Taichung Jazz Festival in Taiwan, collaborating with artists like Guinga, Daniel Jobim, Nelson Ayres and Robertinho Silva.
