Freddie Meredith transfers his debut hour of stand-up, a nomination-winning show from the Edinburgh Fringe, to the Soho Theatre.
Freddie Meredith brings his debut hour Need a Light? to Soho Theatre from 9 to 14 November, the show transferring straight down from the Edinburgh Fringe. It's a one-man sketch comedy hour that picks up where the Fringe run left off, and it's the first time it'll be playing in London.
On stage, Meredith plays a self-appointed thought leader and wannabe-hip loser who spends the show in a nightclub smoking area, dressed in a pleather jacket, dad jeans and a shirt and tie, attempting to start conversations with strangers. The character mimics the mannerisms of a socially confident man, and the resulting excruciating small talk tends to spin into odd conversational abysses. It's a character piece built on that specific kind of social awkwardness where the more someone tries to seem in control, the more the whole thing unravels.
Critics have called him 'one of the brightest new stars in British comedy', with Jamie Demetriou naming him his favourite new voice. Others have drawn comparisons to Alan Partridge or David Brent for the TikTok and reels generation, which gives you a fair idea of the territory he's working in. The show earned a Best Newcomer nomination at the Edinburgh Fringe Comedy Awards and a place on the Picks of EdFest 2026, so it's coming south with some momentum behind it.
