Free floral festival marking the 300th anniversary of St Martin-in-the-Fields, with 24 flower displays and arranging demonstrations by Judith Blacklock and other designers.
Flowers-in-the-Fields is taking over St Martin-in-the-Fields from Thursday 15 to Saturday 17 October, filling the church with floral displays. It's a three-day exhibition, and the whole space becomes the gallery for the duration.
The festival marks the 300th anniversary of the dedication of St Martin-in-the-Fields, which took place on 20 October 1726. That makes it the oldest building on Trafalgar Square, and the exhibition celebrates three centuries of faith and creativity in one of London's most recognisable settings. Vicar Sam Wells describes the church and its community as having inspired church and society for generations, with many influential social ideas issuing from the place.
Floral designer Judith Blacklock, author and founder of the Judith Blacklock Flower School, directs the arrangements. There are 24 displays by the church's own community groups sitting alongside work by UK and international designers. The line-up includes Fleurs-de-Villes, Kent Floral Art, the Surrey Area of NAFAS, and St Martin's community groups, with an international team contributing as well. If you're interested in how it's done, there are flower-arranging demonstrations in the Gallery in the Crypt throughout the exhibition, though those are ticketed.
