Black History Month group show exploring Blackness through the historical, contemporary, mythical and urban, with art from the diaspora across many disciplines.
Features From The Black is showing at Firepit Gallery in North Greenwich, running from 1 to 28 October. Presented by Axematic, it's a Black History Month group show that fills more than 5,000 sq ft of gallery space with art from the diaspora. The exhibition brings together students and graduates from some of the UK's top art schools alongside self-taught artisans, all working across different disciplines and mediums. The artists are born in, living in, or culturally tied to the UK, so the work comes from a range of perspectives within the diaspora.
Rather than sticking to one theme, the show reads Blackness through four facets: the historical, the contemporary, the mythical and the urban. It draws inspiration from the 2022 exhibition In the Black Fantastic and spans painting and sculpture to textile art and poetry soundscapes. Because it's a group show, you'll see a wide variety of work in one go, from the more traditional to the experimental.
