Retrospective exhibition of the work of stage and set designer Es Devlin at the Design Museum, celebrating her 30-year creative practice.
Es Devlin: Other Worlds is on at the Design Museum from 2 October 2026 to 4 April 2027, the first retrospective in Europe to look back at her thirty years of work. It takes up the museum's ground-floor gallery and was put together with Devlin herself.
If you've seen her name on a programme but aren't sure where to place her, it's because she works across so many different worlds. She describes herself as an 'everythingist' — a term she borrowed from Natalia Goncharova — to cover a practice that spans stage design, architecture, sculpture, theatre and installation art. Her credits run from experimental theatre and Beyoncé's stadium tours to U2's residency at the Sphere, the London 2012 Olympic opening and closing ceremonies and the 2022 Super Bowl halftime show. A bright red tunnel, a near-fluorescent shade that keeps coming up in her work, threads the different spaces together.
Inside, you'll find a replica of her London studio, the 30-Year Desk, the kinetic sculpture An Infinite Library, the wall installation Archive Unboxed and a reinterpretation of Come Home Again. The exhibition also ties into the National Year of Reading 2026: the books from Infinite Library are donated to local charities, and a new edition of A Concise Atlas of Es Devlin (Thames & Hudson) comes out to accompany the show.
