Philharmonia Orchestra concert with Sol Gabetta on the cello, conducted by Tugan Sokhiev, pairing Dvořák's Cello Concerto with Mendelssohn's Hebrides Overture and Brahms's Second Symphony.
Sol Gabetta returns to the Royal Festival Hall on Thursday 25 March 2027, playing Dvořák's Cello Concerto with the Philharmonia Orchestra, conducted by Tugan Sokhiev. Gabetta is one of the orchestra's Featured Artists, and this is her latest appearance with them. Her previous outing — Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No. 1 — was described by Bachtrack as compelling, playful and technically formidable, and this return brings back that same personality and flair.
The concerto itself is one of the great showpieces of the cello repertoire, combining Bohemian warmth with thrilling virtuosity. It's a big, expressive work that gives the soloist plenty of room to stretch out, and it sits right at the heart of the evening. Around it, the programme opens with Mendelssohn's Hebrides Overture and closes, after the interval, with Brahms's Symphony No. 2, a lyrical piece described as sunlit yet rich in inner strength. The whole thing runs about an hour and 45 minutes, interval included.
It's part of the Philharmonia Orchestra's Classical Season for Spring/Summer 2027, and it follows an afternoon chamber concert at the Southbank Centre on the same day, so there's a double-bill option if you're in the mood for a full day of music. The recommended age is 7+.
