Guided Christmas walk through literary London to the festively decorated home of Dr Samuel Johnson.
Dr Johnson's House is running its Christmas Walk & Visit this December, a guided walk through literary London that ends at the home of Samuel Johnson. Johnson was the house's most famous resident and the man behind the Dictionary of the English Language, published in 1755. The walk takes you through the heart of the city's literary quarter, following the streets Johnson would have known, before arriving at the house itself.
For this Christmas edition, the house is festively decorated, and they describe it as an enchanting historic home in the middle of that literary quarter. It's a chance to see the place where one of the English language's most influential figures lived, and to see it dressed for the season. The walk doesn't just drop you at the door; it puts the house in context, tracing the literary connections that run through this part of London.
There's also a human side to the history here. The house is linked to Francis Barber, known as 'Faithful Frank', who lived just off Fleet Street and was Johnson's servant, friend and heir. Barber's presence adds another layer to the story of the house and the life Johnson led within it.
