Free exhibition of ceramics, glass, lacquer, metalwork and textile objects by more than 70 contemporary Chinese artists, the first major UK show on the subject.
Dimensions: Contemporary Chinese Studio Crafts is open at the V&A South Kensington and runs until Sunday 26 September 2027. It's the first major UK exhibition dedicated to contemporary Chinese studio craft, and it's spread across two spaces: the China gallery in Room 44 and the Ceramics gallery in Room 146.
The display traces how Chinese artists began to reimagine craft as a medium for artistic expression in the 1980s, and looks at the innovations that have grown from the country's long craft tradition. It brings together ceramics, glass, lacquer, metalwork and textile objects by more than 70 artists, and nearly 80% of what you'll see are recent acquisitions. Much of the work is by women artists, who draw on ancient techniques to pursue contemporary, conceptual ambitions. It's the result of a four-year research and acquisition project funded by the Art Fund and several individual supporters, building on three generations of curatorial effort.
Because it's housed within the V&A's permanent collection of Chinese art and design β some 18,000 objects spanning from 3000 BC to the present β the show sits alongside the very traditions it's responding to. It's supported by KennedyTing and the TiΔn Foundation.
