Ballet Black marks its 25th anniversary with a double bill of 'Ingoma', its 2020 Olivier Award winner, and the new commission '...all towards hope' by Hope Boykin.
Ballet Black are back at Sadler's Wells Theatre on Saturday 17 October, the final night of a run that opened on Wednesday 14. It's a double bill marking the company's 25th anniversary, pairing an older, award-winning piece with a brand new commission.
The first half is Ingoma (2019), the choreographic debut of former company dancer Mthuthuzeli November. It takes its inspiration from the 1946 South African miners' strike and picked up both the 2020 Olivier Award and the Black British Theatre Award for Best Dance Production. The second half is ...all towards hope, a new work created specifically for this anniversary by Hope Boykin, a two-time Bessie Award winner and Alvin Ailey alumna making her UK choreographic debut.
There's a bit of history behind the occasion. Ballet Black was founded in 2001 by Artistic Director Cassa Pancho OBE, who's personally commissioned more than 70 new works over the last quarter-century. The company has spent that time bringing bold new ballet to stages across the UK and opening doors for dancers and artists of Black and Asian descent. This double bill, with one piece from 2019 and another from 2026, puts two of those commissions side by side.
