One-woman play by Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti about a mother navigating life after prison, with the audience drawn into the action.
Baby runs at Brixton House from 8 to 31 October, a darkly funny, provocative play by Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti and directed by Milli Bhatia. It's a one-woman show about a mother navigating life after prison and her desperate desire to survive, and it's staged in a way that draws the audience into the action, making you part of the solution to the protagonist's problems.
The lead carries the whole thing on her own, and she's got the credits to back it up: you might recognise her from Doctor Who, The Diplomat, The Long Call and Tom Jones, with stage work at the Donmar Warehouse and the National Theatre. The production has been praised for its urgent social message and for the emotionally detailed way she handles the role.
It's a heavy one, though. The play is recommended for ages 14 and over, and there are content warnings for criminalisation and imprisonment, adverse childhood experiences like neglect and sexual abuse, the separation of mother and child through imprisonment, foster care, sex work, abusive relationships, drug and alcohol use and self-harm. It's a lot to take in, so it's worth knowing what's on the table before you book.

On the practical side, it runs an hour and ten minutes with no interval, so you're in and out in one go. Tickets start from £16.40, and it's playing at Brixton House throughout October.
