Autumn Knight: I Can't Complain

Autumn Knight's I Can't Complain is running at the ICA in the Lower Gallery until 29 November, and it's her first major presentation in the UK. Knight is a New York-based interdisciplinary artist who works across theatre, psychology, improvisation and social exchange, and her pieces usually start with a prompt that leaves plenty of room for conflict and exchange. She studied drama therapy and theatre arts, holds an MA in Drama Therapy from New York University, and has picked up a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Nancy B. Negley Rome Prize and an Anonymous Was A Woman Award along the way. Her piece WALL (2014-16) was the first live performance work to be acquired for the permanent collection of The Studio Museum in Harlem.

The show turns the Lower Gallery into an installation of audio and video, dominated by a canopy of balloons — a recurring motif in her work — and a sound piece built from recorded conversations about everyday irritations. It asks when complaining is cathartic, when it's just frustrating, and when it becomes politically empowering. There's a live element to it too: Knight herself performs on 1, 12 and 15 October, and further performances follow in November with Samra Mayanja, Michelangelo Miccolis and nick von kleist.

It's open daily from 12:00 to 19:00, though it closes earlier on Thursdays at 17:00. Full price is £7.50, which includes a £1.50 donation, or £6.00 without it. Concessions for 18-24s, disabled visitors, pensioners and students are £4.50 or £4.00 without the donation. Entry is free for Art Fund members, disabled companions, under 18s and visitors with income support. And if you're on a budget, there's a pay-what-you-can slot between 12:00 and 13:00 every day, starting from £3 online.
