Immersive exhibition of installations and miniature sets by first-year Theatre & Performance Design and Theatre & Production Technology students at LIPA.
Welcome to The Club opens at the George Harrison Workshop Studio at LIPA on Tuesday 26 January, and it stays open until Thursday 28 January. It's an immersive exhibition of installations and miniature sets, and the people behind it are first-year Theatre & Performance Design and Theatre & Production Technology students at LIPA. So, rather than a polished gallery show, this is a first-year project on display.
The theme is the club as a creative refuge. The exhibition looks at the clubs, cabarets and nightlife spaces that have inspired generations of artists, and it pulls from a pretty wide map to do it. You'll find references to Weimar Berlin and Harlem, alongside Manchester's Haçienda and Liverpool's own Eric's and Cream. It's that mix of the international and the local that gives it some real grounding here in the city.
Because it's built around installations and miniature sets, it's more of a walk-through than a sit-down affair. You'll be moving through the room rather than standing in one spot, and the miniature sets mean you're seeing these spaces from a bit of a distance, like looking into a dollhouse version of a night out. It's a good way to see how the students have interpreted all those different eras and cities in one go.
