Stage adaptation of the classic British sitcom 'Dinnerladies', directed by Sean Foley and starring Les Dennis, Sue Cleaver, Karen Henthorn and Amy Drake.
Victoria Wood's Dinnerladies comes to the Liverpool Empire from 13 to 17 July 2027, bringing one of the most recognisable sitcoms of the late nineties and early two-thousands to the stage. If you remember the original, it's the one set in a Manchester factory canteen, revolving around Brenda Furlong and the small, distinct world she shares with the chain-smoking manager Tony and the dinnerladies Dolly, Twinkle, Jean and Anita, with the wise caretaker Stan rounding out the bunch. It won two British Comedy Awards and earned a BAFTA nomination during its run.
This stage version is a new adaptation, and there's a bit of history behind it: it was commissioned by Victoria Wood's estate, and it's the first time the estate has directly commissioned a piece of her work. The adaptation is by Beth and Emma Kilcoyne, the duo who wrote Roger And Val Have Just Got In, which starred Dawn French. It's being directed by Olivier Award winner Sean Foley.
The cast for this run is well-known to anyone who follows British comedy. Les Dennis takes on the role of Stan, Sue Cleaver plays Jean, Karen Henthorn is Dolly, and Amy Drake plays Bren. It's a small, character-driven ensemble, and the focus is on the same kind of canteen banter and workplace friction that made the sitcom work in the first place.
