A queer dance theatre show exploring the natural and unnatural, blending satire, poetry and performance as part of the Homotopia Festival.
Thick & Tight bring their award-winning show Natural Behaviour to Unity Theatre on Saturday 7 November, as part of the Homotopia Festival. They describe it as sitting somewhere between a variety show and a biology essay come alive, and it's a queer look at what it means to be natural or unnatural, built on the idea that diversity is the essential state of all life.
The company's signature is a mix of dance, satire, impersonation and poetry that aims for the outrageous, the beautiful, the hilarious and the profound. The show opens with a Hoof Dance by a bright orange pantomime horse set to an edit of 'Disco Inferno', and from there the evening ranges from a harrowing solo lamenting the extinction of British birds to a ballet set to Brahms' Second Piano Concerto and a duet for two moths inspired by Japanese Noh and Kyogen theatre.
Among the portraits the show brings to life are two moths, a pantomime horse, the dust in Quentin Crisp's room, some flies on the wall, a lamenting songbird, a blade of grass and a lesbian seagull. It's co-directed by Daniel Hay-Gordon and El Perry, with dance artists Annie Edwards (Candoco), Azara Meghie (Ray Young, Talawa) and Jahmarley Bachelor (Punchdrunk).
