The Unthanks reinterpret traditional wassails, carols and old stories in a winter fantasia.
The Unthanks bring The Unthanks in Winter to the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall on Monday 21 December, just before Christmas. It's a winter fantasia built around traditional wassails, carols and old stories, all reimagined in their characteristic magpie style.
The show comes from the album of the same name, which they describe as embracing both the dark and the light of the most ritualistic of seasons. The record holds the warmth and nostalgia of the festive period alongside the chill and darkness of the winter months, and the reflective ritualisms of the turn of the year. It's that contrast that gives the set its shape: the cosy, indoor side of Christmas and the cold, outdoor side of midwinter.
One critic put it this way: 'Their voices contain the warmth of a fire and the bright cold of a starlit night.' The album earned four stars from The Times.

It's a Monday night, so you'll be heading to Hope Street on a working day rather than a weekend. The concert starts at 7:30pm, and tickets start from £37, which includes a venue restoration levy. If you're looking for something to do in the city that week, this is a good one to have on the radar.
