The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Vasily Petrenko with Boris Giltburg on piano, plays Britten's Sinfonia da Requiem, Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 4 and Act 2 of Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker.
The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra are at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall on Thursday 3 December, with Vasily Petrenko conducting and Boris Giltburg on piano. The evening is billed as Petrenko and Giltburg: winter magic, and it brings the two back together for Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 4 — a piece described as the sound of a man in transition, newly arrived in New York and exploring jazz and impressionism.
That's the centrepiece, but it's not the only thing on the bill. Britten's Sinfonia da Requiem opens the programme, presented as a powerful plea for peace and heard ahead of the 50th anniversary of the composer's death. The night closes with Act 2 of Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker, a festive favourite that's especially well-suited to Petrenko's baton.
Petrenko's connection to the orchestra runs deep. He's been the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic's Conductor Laureate since 2021 and served as Chief Conductor from 2009. During his time here, he won a Gramophone Award and a Classical Brit Award, was made an official Citizen of Honour, and received honorary doctorates from the University of Liverpool and Liverpool Hope University. He's also the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra's Music Director and Chief Conductor of the European Union Youth Orchestra.
