Live jazz tribute by The Jazz Room to Marvin Gaye, reimagining his greatest hits with improvisation in an intimate room at District.
The Jazz Room is bringing a tribute to Marvin Gaye to District in the Baltic Triangle, with the first date on Friday 13 November. It's a live band — saxophones, trumpets and vocals — working through Gaye's biggest songs, and the set is built around the hits you'll recognise: 'Let's Get It On', 'I Heard It Through the Grapevine', 'Sexual Healing', 'What's Going On', 'How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)' and 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough'. They're not just playing them straight through, either; the band reimagines them with spontaneous improvisation, so the arrangements shift a bit each time.
The room is kept low-lit with immersive sound, and the show runs for about an hour. It's billed as a celebration of Gaye's impact on music, culture and society, and the focus is on the silky, hypnotic vocals and emotional depth he was known for. The band describes it as a tribute to one of the most iconic and influential voices in soul music, remembered for the sound that defined a generation.
District itself is a 275-capacity grassroots music space in the Baltic Triangle, a former art gallery with roots in the legendary Flying Picket. It's an 18+ show, and seats are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis across four zones, with shared tables and a standing area. Carers are admitted free with appropriate documentation.
