Amateur production by LIPA acting students of Jez Butterworth's play about the Webb sisters returning to their family home in Blackpool in 1976.
The Hills of California runs at the Paul McCartney Auditorium from Thursday 11 February to Saturday 13 February 2027. It's an amateur production put on by third-year Acting students at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, part of the school's public season.
The play is by Jez Butterworth and follows the Webb sisters, who return to their family home in Blackpool during the sweltering summer of 1976. Their mother is seriously ill upstairs, and as they gather around her, long-suppressed dreams, disappointments and rivalries start to surface. It's described as tender, funny and deeply moving, and it's about what happens when the stories a family tells itself can no longer hold everything together. The production is presented by arrangement with Nick Hern Books, contains adult themes and is recommended for audiences aged 14 and over.
