A chilling theatrical adaptation of Shirley Jackson's classic ghost story, adapted for stage by Stef Smith and directed by Martin Constantine.
The Haunting of Hill House comes to the Everyman & Playhouse Theatres on Tuesday 3 November, as part of a UK tour. It's a stage adaptation of Shirley Jackson's classic ghost story, the one that's spent decades as a go-to for anyone who likes their hauntings with a side of psychological dread.
If you're not familiar with the original, it's a slow-burn about a group of people who spend a few days at Hill House, a sprawling, unsettling place that doesn't seem to let its guests go easily. The story is less about jump-scares and more about the atmosphere—the feeling that the house is watching you, and that the people inside are starting to fray at the edges. It's that particular kind of gothic tension that works well on stage, where the silence between lines can do as much heavy lifting as the dialogue itself.
This version is adapted for the stage by Stef Smith and directed by Martin Constantine. Smith has taken Jackson's novel and reworked it for a live audience, and Constantine is the one bringing it to life. It's a touring production, so this is one of the stops on its way around the UK, and it's coming to Liverpool as part of that run.
