Four nights of festive carols, seasonal readings and audience singalongs by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, with Jess Dandy and Matthew Hamilton.
The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra are back at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall this December with Spirit of Christmas, their festive concert that's become a bit of a city tradition. It's not just a one-off, either — they're running it across four nights: 18, 19, 22 and 23 December, so you've got a few dates to choose from if you're trying to fit it around the Christmas rush.
The set is built around the carols we all know, with seasonal readings and audience singalongs woven in. It's the kind of thing that works better when you're actually there in the room rather than listening on your own, and the singalongs are a big part of that — you're expected to join in, not just sit and listen. The whole thing is billed as the city's biggest Christmas party, and it's staged across those four nights rather than as a single evening.
On the podium is Matthew Hamilton, the Philharmonic's Director of Choirs and Singing, who'll be conducting. He's joined by mezzo-soprano Jess Dandy, with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Choir and the Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Choir providing the choral weight. Having both the main choir and the youth choir on stage at once gives the sound a particular scale, and it's a good look at the different voices the Philharmonic draws on across the city.

Spirit of Christmas is part of the Philharmonic's wider festive programme, and the series is sponsored by David M Robinson. All four performances start at 19:30, so whether you're heading in from work or coming from across town, you've got a bit of leeway before the first note.
