UK tour of the musical based on the classic MGM film, with original director Jonathan Church and choreographer Andrew Wright, and a stage shower of 14,000 litres of water.
Singin' In The Rain is coming to the Liverpool Empire from 13 to 17 April 2027, a short run that brings the musical to the city for just five days. It's based on the classic Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film that starred Gene Kelly, and this particular production has a bit of history behind it: it transferred to the West End's Palace Theatre in 2012, where it picked up four Olivier Award nominations.
The story follows Hollywood's golden couple, Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont, whose lives are turned upside down when 'talkies' replace silent movies and an aspiring actress is drafted in to save the day. It's a look at that specific moment in cinema when the silent era ended and sound took over, and the production is built around the MGM score, with 'Good Morning', 'Make 'em Laugh' and the title track all in there. The choreography is high-energy, and the set design pours more than 14,000 litres of water onto the stage every night.
Original director Jonathan Church and choreographer Andrew Wright are reuniting to bring this version back to the stage. It was a hit in the West End and has toured internationally, and it's now on the road across the UK and Ireland, with the Liverpool Empire being one of its stops. If you're familiar with the film, you'll recognise the songs and the general arc, but seeing it live is a different thing entirely, especially with that much water on stage.
