Live electronic music performance by Robin Rimbaud, known as Scanner, with support from The Metamorph.
Scanner plays The Capstone Theatre on Friday 27 November, with support from The Metamorph (Gavin Brick). Scanner is the stage name of British artist Robin Rimbaud, who's spent more than three decades working at the intersection of sound, space and surveillance. He takes intercepted transmissions, field recordings and everyday sonic fragments and turns them into immersive compositions, so the set is as much about listening to the world as it is about the music itself.
He's been at it since 1991, producing concerts, installations and records. Albums like Mass Observation (1994), Delivery (1997) and An Ascent (2020) are cited as innovative works of contemporary electronic music, and the live show draws from that same territory. Beyond the records, he's scored 66 contemporary dance productions, including the musical comedy Kirikou & Karaba, Narnia and Qualia for the Royal Ballet, and Nightfall for the Dutch National Ballet, which was the world's first virtual reality ballet.
His commissions go well beyond the stage. He did the sound for the Philips Wake-Up Light in 2009, the re-opening of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam in 2012, and the Cisco telephone system used in offices worldwide. Salles des Départs is permanently installed in a working morgue in Paris, and his house Vex won the RIBA London Award 2018. He's collaborated with Bryan Ferry, Wayne MacGregor, Mike Kelley, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Michael Nyman, Steve McQueen, Laurie Anderson and Hussein Chalayan.
