Student cast from St. Mary's College, Crosby, stages a contemporary interpretation of Euripides' Greek tragedy Iphigenia in Aulis in two performances.
St. Mary's College, Crosby is bringing Iphigenia in Aulis to The Capstone Theatre on Friday 6 November and Saturday 7 November, both nights starting at 7pm. It's a Greek tragedy drawn from Euripides, performed by the college's student cast.
The story is one of those heavy, impossible choices that the Greeks did best. The Greek fleet is stranded at Aulis, and Agamemnon is told he must sacrifice his daughter, Iphigenia, to secure the winds needed to sail for Troy. From there, it's a study of family, war, ambition and the cost of getting what you want. The production is staged as a contemporary interpretation, so the sun-soaked world of the Greek camp collides with the darkness of Euripides' original story.
It's a student cast taking this on, and they're working with some mature themes: war, violence and the threatened sacrifice of a child. There's no graphic violence shown on stage, but the subject matter doesn't shy away from the weight of the original play. It's a short run, limited to these two performances, so if you want to see it, you'll need to pick one of the two dates.
