Indian classical concert centred on the santoor and the tabla, with Sandip Chatterjee and Kousic Sen at the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Hall.
Sandip Chatterjee brings Indian classical music to the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Hall on Friday 30 October, performing in the Music Room on Hope Street. He's joined by Kousic Sen, Milap's Artist in Residence, and the night is built around the santoor, a hundred-stringed hammered dulcimer that Chatterjee plays with a dexterity that's earned him the President of India Award. His rippling, bell-like tones are the lead here, and they're described as offering a sense of calm and reflection.
Sen provides the counterpoint on tabla, the two-drum set that's a staple of Indian classical music. As a master of the instrument, his energetic and spontaneous rhythmic work adds a vibrant pulse that balances the santoor's more delicate melodies. Together they build a musical dialogue that moves from quiet reflection to thrilling, high-energy crescendos, so the evening should hold its own across the different moods.
The concert is part of MILAP's Autumn Season 2026, and it's held in the Music Room rather than the main hall, which keeps the setting intimate. It's a good spot for this kind of thing, where you can hear the finer details of the santoor's hundred strings without the scale of a larger room getting in the way.
