The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Andris Poga and with Tabea Zimmermann on viola, play Strauss's Rosenkavalier suite and the Walton Viola Concerto.
The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra are at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall on Thursday 22 April 2027, with Andris Poga conducting. The evening is built around the suite from Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier, a lush, comedic exploration of love and mortality that shows off the composer's command of instrumental colour through opulent orchestration. It's a big, romantic piece of writing, and it takes up the main slot of the night.
Tabea Zimmermann, described as the doyenne of the viola world, makes a long-awaited return to Liverpool to perform William Walton's Viola Concerto. It's a fitting choice for the year of the composer's 125th birthday, and Zimmermann takes the lead on it. The rest of the programme fills out the evening: Shostakovich's Hamlet Suite No. 1, played in excerpts, and Strauss's Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks, which shares the bill with the Rosenkavalier suite.
The venue itself has a bit of history worth knowing. The Philharmonic Hall is the second hall on the site, built in the 1930s to replace the original 1849 building that burned down. It was designed in the Streamline Moderne style of Art Deco and has been hailed since opening as one of the finest concert halls in the country. A 2017 refurbishment by architects Caruso St John won a RIBA award, so it's a space that's been looked after.

It's a full programme, with the Rosenkavalier suite as the centrepiece and Zimmermann's return on viola as the other big draw. The concert starts at 19:30.
