The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, with Andrew Manze and Nobuyuki Tsujii at the piano, plays Shostakovich's Second Piano Concerto, a new piece by Carmel Smickersgill and Sibelius' Sixth Symphony.
Nobuyuki Tsujii is back at the Philharmonic Hall on Thursday 29 October, returning to Liverpool with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Principal Guest Conductor Andrew Manze. It's a night that pulls from a few different places at once, with a new piece, a playful classic, and a late-Romantic symphony to close.
The evening opens with A Brick Thrown With Love by the young composer Carmel Smickersgill. It's a brand-new work that blends pop and classical influences to look at love, heartbreak and death, and Smickersgill describes it as "silly music that comes from a serious place". The orchestra premiered it at the BBC Proms back in September, so this is one of its early outings.
Then comes the main draw: Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No. 2, with Tsujii on the piano. It's the jocular, fun-loving side of Shostakovich, and it's the piece that gives the night its title. The second half shifts gear with Mussorgsky's Night on the Bare Mountain, and the whole thing closes with Sibelius' Sixth Symphony, a luminous, restrained work inspired by early English music.
