Matthew Bourne's revised version of Prokofiev's Cinderella, a wartime romance set during the Blitz, on its UK tour.
Matthew Bourne's Cinderella comes to the Liverpool Empire from 16 to 20 February 2027, as part of a major UK tour. It's a dance production directed and choreographed by Bourne himself, set to Sergei Prokofiev's score, and it's touring to mark 30 years since it first premiered in the West End in 1997.
If you've never seen it, the story is a wartime romance: Cinderella meets a young RAF pilot and they fall in love, only to be torn apart by the horrors of the Blitz. Bourne frames the whole thing as a tribute to the indomitable spirit of London during the war, so it's as much about the city and the era as it is about the two people at the centre.
This isn't the original 1997 version, though. Bourne revised it in 2010, introducing new choreography and design to Prokofiev's music, and that's the version that's been touring the UK and winning critical acclaim. The creative team behind it includes Lez Brotherston on set and costume design, Neil Austin on lighting, Paul Groothuis on sound, and Duncan McLean on video and projection.
