Manchester Collective mark Philip Glass's 90th anniversary with his string quartets and new work by Rylan Gleave.
Manchester Collective bring Glass Reframed to The Tung Auditorium on Sunday 7 February, the first in a series they've put together to mark Philip Glass's 90th birthday. The evening is built around Glass's string quartets, pairing the early and the late: String Quartet No. 1 Part I and String Quartet No. 5. It's a bit of a bookend, taking you from the dissonance of his early work through to the lyrical repetition he's known for, and the musical freedom that comes later.
Running alongside the Glass is Rylan Gleave, who works across doom metal, experimental and orchestral music and is described as a fearless presence on stage. He'll perform Kyrie Eleison and All Men Unto Me, plus a new commission written for this series. There's also Devotions by Edmund Finnis on the bill. The whole thing is performed by Rakhi Singh (violin), Donald Grant (violin), Ruth Gibson (viola), Peggy Nolan (cello) and Gleave on vocals.
Glass is a towering figure not just in minimalism but in contemporary culture, having collaborated with everyone from Martin Scorsese to Aphex Twin. This is an unconventional take on him, and the pairing with Gleave's background in doom metal and experimental music puts that in perspective. The new commission was made by Manchester Collective with support from the Cockayne Foundation and the Vaughan Williams Foundation, and the whole evening is supported by the Leche Trust and the Maria Björnson Memorial Fund.
