Liverpool Mozart Orchestra opens its new season with Mozart's Paris Symphony, Thea Musgrave's 'The Seasons' and Beethoven's Violin Concerto, with Cristian de Sá on violin.
Liverpool Mozart Orchestra open their new season at The Tung Auditorium on Sunday 1 November, with a programme that puts Mozart, Thea Musgrave and Beethoven on the same bill. It's the first night of their new run of concerts, and they're starting with a fairly wide spread: a vibrant Mozart symphony, a modern piece by Musgrave, and Beethoven's Violin Concerto.
Mozart's Symphony No. 31 in D major K.297, known as the 'Paris' symphony, is the opener. It's a bright, energetic work with stirring tuttis and an active bass line that sets a fairly high bar for the rest of the evening. Then comes The Seasons by Thea Musgrave, a Scottish composer born in 1928. She wrote it around paintings from five different centuries, using those images as a metaphor for the cycles of a human life. It's a more contemporary piece than the other two, and it sits right in the middle of the set.
The night closes with Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D major Op. 61. It didn't have the easiest start — the premiere was a bit of a struggle — but it didn't stay that way. The violinist Joseph Joachim later described it as the 'greatest' German violin concerto, and it's been a crowd favourite ever since. It's a big, epic work that takes up a good chunk of the second half.
