Student ensembles of the Liverpool University Music Society play brass band, percussion and stage and screen orchestra pieces in their winter concert.
The Liverpool University Music Society (LUMS) bring their Winter Concert to The Tung Auditorium on Friday 18 December. It's the end-of-semester showcase for the society's student ensembles, and the bill brings together three very different groups on one stage: the Brass Band, the Percussion Ensemble, and the Stage and Screen Orchestra.
That mix is the whole point of the night. Each ensemble plays a selection of the repertoire they've worked through over the term, so you get a brass band, a percussion group, and an orchestra all in one sitting. The society describes it as a night where each instrument gets its turn to shine, and with those three ensembles sharing the bill, the music shifts across the evening rather than sticking to one sound. It's a good way to hear what the different student groups have been up to since the start of the semester.
The performance runs for about two hours, including an interval. If you're bringing the family, there are a few things to keep in mind: the auditorium isn't likely to be suitable for children under five because of the acoustics, under-16s need to be accompanied by an adult, and under-10s aren't allowed on the balconies. Food and hot drinks aren't permitted inside the auditorium, but The Fröhlich Café Bar opens 90 minutes before the show and stays open through the interval.
