Beginner-friendly hands-on workshop to learn the techniques and materials of Nihonga, traditional Japanese painting.
Floating Art are running a Nihonga workshop at Duke Street Food & Drink Market on Sunday 15 November, from 1 pm to 3:30 pm. It's called the Golden Edition, and the focus is Nihonga, traditional Japanese painting. If you've never heard the term, it's a style that uses mineral pigments and natural glues, often with gold leaf, and it's quite different from the oil or acrylic painting most of us are used to. The session is led by local artist Ula Fung, who'll be teaching the techniques and materials of the craft in a hands-on format.
It's set up as a beginner-friendly workshop, so you don't need any prior experience to get involved. You'll be working through the process during the session rather than just watching a demonstration, and you'll leave with a better handle on how Nihonga actually works. The 'Golden Edition' title points to the use of gold leaf, one of the most distinctive parts of the tradition, which is something you'll get to work with yourself.
