Lunchtime chamber concert by the Hope Street Ensemble pairing works by Beethoven and Brahms.
Hope Street Ensemble are playing at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall on Monday 14 December, as part of their The Classical Inheritance series. It's a lunchtime concert, starting at 13:00 in the Music Room, and it runs for about an hour.
The ensemble is a chamber group within the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, and this series pairs chamber works by Beethoven and Brahms. The whole thing is built around the idea of composers at turning points: the programme note frames the two pieces as intense works written at such moments in each composer's life, both carrying a strong sense of reflection and offering different responses to inner struggle.
There's a bit of a contrast between the two. Beethoven's writing is described as tightly focused and dramatic, while Brahms' is broader, warmer and filled with a feeling of late-life richness. Hearing them side by side lets you see how two different minds handled similar ground. The lunchtime format keeps the whole thing to around an hour, so it's a relatively easy one to fit into a working day.

It's in the Music Room, which is a smaller, more intimate space than the main hall, and the 13:00 start means you're in and out by early afternoon. If you're around Hope Street on a Monday, it's a good way to spend your lunch break.
