Heaven 17 play the O2 Academy Liverpool on Thursday 22 October, as part of their Penthouse and Pavement 45th anniversary tour. The night opens with support from Peter Coyle, formerly of The Lotus Eaters.
For those who know the name but aren't sure where to start, Heaven 17 are synth-pop pioneers. Their 1982 debut studio album, Penthouse and Pavement, is widely recognised as a trailblazing early synth work that fused cutting-edge electronics with political lyricism and hard-hitting funk. It was a cornerstone of the British post-punk movement, and the record laid the foundation for much of modern electronic music. The Liverpool date is one stop on the tour marking its 45th anniversary, and the band's founders Martyn Ware and Glenn Gregory will be playing tracks from that debut.
Having the original founders on stage gives the set a direct link back to the record's early days. The tour is built around Penthouse and Pavement, so the evening focuses on the material from that first album rather than a career-spanning best-of. With Peter Coyle opening, it's a double bill of synth-inflected pop from two different eras of the scene.
