A two-part healing offering featuring Qigong practice and Chinese tea meditation by Feixia Yu and Hannah Yu-Pearson, in response to Rae-Yen Song's exhibition.
Feixia Yu and Hannah Yu-Pearson are at FACT on Saturday 24 October for Healing Offering: ahma's sweep, a two-part session that brings together movement and medicine. The two are mother and daughter, and they carry forward a lineage of Chinese movement, healing and medicine practice. The session is split into two distinct halves: the first is led by Feixia, who guides a gentle Qigong practice through seasonal Daoyin movements; the second is led by Hannah, who shares a Chinese tea meditation and a seasonal food ritual.
Behind the practice is Hui ę §, which Hannah describes as a practice of nourishment and gathering as medicine. The name comes from the Chinese character ę § ā a combination of hands, a broom and a heart, symbolising the act of cleansing the heart anew each day. That image of sweeping carries through to the session's title, ahma's sweep, which is one of the sculptural tools in the exhibition that inspired the offering.
The session is a response to Rae-Yen Song's exhibition ā¢~TUA~ā¢ 大ē¼ ā¢~MAK~ā¢, which draws on the flux and resilience of the immigrant experience and transforms the gallery into a darkened abyss suspended between the deep sea and the skies above. The offering sits within that context, with the movement and the ritual acting as a companion to the work on display.
