Lunchtime concert by the Liverpool Philharmonic's Emma Burgess and Gareth Twigg with Benjamin Powell, exploring works for clarinet and bassoon.
Emma Burgess and Gareth Twigg are taking the stage at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall on Monday 2 November, joined by Benjamin Powell for a lunchtime concert that puts the clarinet and bassoon front and centre. It's an unusual pairing — the two instruments don't often share the spotlight — and that's exactly what the programme is built around.
Beethoven was the first composer to write duos for the two, and with the 200th anniversary of his death approaching, Burgess and Twigg start there. From that point, the set traces how the partnership developed over the years, moving from the lush melodies of Glinka to Poulenc's quirky Sonata for clarinet and bassoon, and music by Poulenc's close friend Benjamin Britten. It's a way of hearing how two instruments that rarely play together ended up finding their own common ground.
Burgess and Twigg are both members of the Liverpool Philharmonic, so this is a chance to hear them step out of the orchestra and take the lead. The whole thing is held in the Music Room, which keeps it intimate and close-up rather than a big hall affair. It's a one-hour set, so it fits easily into a lunch break if you're working nearby.
