Lunchtime concert by the Liverpool Philharmonic's Emma Burgess and Gareth Twigg and pianist Benjamin Powell exploring the clarinet and bassoon duo.
Emma Burgess, Gareth Twigg and Benjamin Powell play the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall on Monday 2 November, in the Music Room. It's a lunchtime concert, so you'll be in and out over the course of an hour, with the music starting at 13:00. Burgess and Twigg are both with the Liverpool Philharmonic, and they're joined here by pianist Benjamin Powell.
The whole thing is built around an unusual pairing: the clarinet and the bassoon. It's not a combination you hear every day, and the programme traces how it's worked over the years. Beethoven was the first composer to write duos for the two, and with the 200th anniversary of his death approaching, Burgess and Twigg open with one of those groundbreaking works. From there, the set follows how the partnership developed, moving into the lush melodies of Glinka, then into Poulenc's quirky Sonata for clarinet and bassoon, and finally into music by Poulenc's close friend Benjamin Britten.

It's a good way to hear two instruments that usually play their parts from within the orchestra brought right to the front. Burgess takes the clarinet, Twigg the bassoon, and Powell holds it together on piano. If you're around the city on a Monday lunchtime and fancy an hour of something a bit different, this is a straightforward one to slot in. It's at the Music Room in the Liverpool Philharmonic, starting at 13:00 on 2 November.
