A four-week reading session exploring the novel Brotherless Night by V.V. Ganeshananthan, part of The Reader's 2026 Bookshelf at Calderstones.
The Reader at Calderstones is starting a new Deep Read session on Thursday 22 October, and this time the book is Brotherless Night by V.V. Ganeshananthan. It's part of their 2026 Bookshelf programme, which takes a single title and spreads it across four weekly sessions rather than rushing through it in one go. The first one kicks off on the 22nd, and from there you'll meet once a week for a month.
The way it works is pretty straightforward: you start right at the beginning of the novel and pause at key points, which leaves room to actually think about what the text is doing and how it's making you feel. It's slow reading in the truest sense—taking the time to sit with the story instead of just getting to the end. There's no prior reading required, so you can just turn up and pick it up as you go. Copies of the book are provided during the sessions, and you can also find them at The Reader Bookshop if you'd rather have your own copy to mark up.
Brotherless Night itself is a searing novel set during the Sri Lankan civil war. It follows a courageous young woman fighting to protect her dream of becoming a doctor while the conflict devastates the country around her. It's the kind of story that stays with you, and the four-week format gives you the space to really digest it.
