The Tony and Olivier award-winning musical about 1920s Chicago, with music by Kander and Ebb and choreography by Bob Fosse.
Chicago is coming to the Liverpool Empire from 24 March to 27 March 2027, a short run that brings the musical back to the city. It's the one with the jazz hands and the razzle-dazzle, and if you've never seen it, it's a good place to start with the whole genre.
The story is set in the decadence of 1920s Chicago and follows Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who kills her on-the-side lover after he threatens to walk out on her. From there, she works the room, the media, and her rival cellmate Velma Kelly, hiring the city's slickest criminal lawyer to turn the whole thing into a barrage of sensational headlines. It's a cynical look at fame and the legal system, played for laughs and dance numbers.
Behind it are John Kander and Fred Ebb on music and lyrics, with choreography by Bob Fosse. The score is a big part of the draw, with 'Razzle Dazzle', 'Cell Block Tango' and 'All That Jazz' all in there. Over the years it's picked up six Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards and a Grammy, and it's known for drawing standing ovations.
