Lunchtime string quartet concert with the Bromborough String Quartet playing Beethoven and Brahms.
Bromborough String Quartet are back at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall on Monday 25 January 2027, with a lunchtime concert in the Music Room. It's the second instalment of The Classical Inheritance, a series that looks at how the string quartet evolved over a century, and this one pairs Beethoven with Brahms.
The first half is Beethoven's String Quartet in G major, Op.18 No.2. It's part of the Op.18 set the quartet has been working through, and it's a piece full of grace, wit and innovation. If you've caught their previous Beethoven outings, this is the next chapter in that exploration.
The second half is Brahms' String Quartet in C minor, Op.51 No.1. It's a different beast entirely: Brahms' first published quartet, a piece he laboured over for years under the weight of Beethoven's legacy. Where the Beethoven is light and elegant, the Brahms is dense and emotionally heavy, and hearing them side by side shows the shift from late Classicism to the full-on Romanticism that followed.
