A cappella concert by APOLLO5, a celebratory Advent vocal showcase with works by Byrd, Poulenc, Walton and MacMillan.
APOLLO5 bring their Christmas programme to The Tung Auditorium on Sunday 6 December, a matinee that starts at 2:30pm. It's presented by Liverpool Philharmonic, and the whole thing is built around a vocal showcase for the Advent season.
The set pulls from a few centuries of music, which is where the variety comes in. You'll hear William Byrd, the French composer Francis Poulenc, and the British figures William Walton and James MacMillan. And then there's Coldplay, which puts a modern pop song right alongside the older, more traditional stuff. It's that mix that gives the afternoon its shape: the early church music, the 20th-century classics, and something from the radio, all sung by the same five voices.
If you haven't come across them before, APOLLO5 is a vocal ensemble known for a bright, rich sound. Classic FM has called their singing "exceptionally beautiful", and BBC Music Magazine described them as having "exceptional cohesion and effortless style... faultless". They're the only ones on stage, so the whole afternoon rests on their voices.
