Birmingham Rep's stage adaptation of Khaled Hosseini's novel about two women in war-torn Afghanistan, on UK tour at the Everyman.
A Thousand Splendid Suns comes to the Everyman from Tuesday 23 February to Saturday 27 February 2027, as part of a UK tour. It's a stage adaptation of Khaled Hosseini's bestselling novel, which has sold over 38 million copies worldwide and is described as his spiritual sequel to The Kite Runner.
The story is set in 1992 in an Afghanistan ravaged by war. It follows Laila, an orphan taken as her neighbour Rasheed's second wife, and his first wife, Mariam, who becomes pregnant. The two women become unlikely allies against starvation, brutality and fear as the Taliban take over. Rina Fatania plays Mariam, and the production is adapted from Hosseini's book by Ursula Rani Sarma, produced by Birmingham Rep and directed by Kimberley Sykes, with design by Simon Kenny.
It's staged at the Everyman's sister theatre on Williamson Square, a Grade II* listed Victorian music hall that opened in 1866 as the Star Music Hall and became the home of the city's repertory company in 1911, the first repertory in Britain to own the freehold of its theatre. The show was rated four out of five by WhatsOnStage.
