Martin McDonagh's volatile and wickedly comic play about gravediggers in rural County Galway, directed by Chris Sonnex.
A Skull in Connemara runs at the Everyman Theatre from Saturday 20 February to Saturday 13 March 2027, with evening performances at 7:30pm and matinees on Saturday 27 February, Thursday 4 March, Saturday 6 March, Thursday 11 March and Saturday 13 March.
It's a Martin McDonagh comedy set in rural County Galway, directed by Chris Sonnex. The story follows Mick and Mairtin, two gravediggers hired not to bury, but to exhume the bones of people who died years before. In a village this small, rumours and secrets don't stay buried for long, and the play digs through the dirt of the place with a volatile, unsettling, and wickedly comic touch.
This is a return to the Everyman for Sonnex, who directed McDonagh's The Lieutenant of Inishmore here in 2024. If you're not already familiar with McDonagh, he's a writer who works as much in the theatre as he does in film. His stage credits include The Beauty Queen of Leenane, The Cripple of Inishmaan, Hangmen and A Very Very Very Dark Matter, while his films run from In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths to The Banshees of Inisherin and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. This production sits right in that territory: dark, funny, and rooted in the west of Ireland.
